SOPA and PIPA are dead!

Sorry I missed posting here yesterday. I’ve been fighting off a cold over the last few days. I’m getting better. You’ll see two posts here today to make up for missing yesterday. So I just saw on this post: http://www.theinternetpatrol.com/sopa-and-pipa-effectively-killed-by-internet-lashback-and-blackouts/ that SOPA and PIPA are no more. Yay! That just shows you what kind of power we have on the Internet when we come together for a cause. So what does this mean for your business? You need to get people passionate about what you are offering. You need to find ways to use social media to project the message you want heard.

Why SOPA is a scary bill

Okay unless you have been under a rock this week, I am sure you have heard the noise about SOPA. I’m not going to repeat what SOPA is because mashable already did an excellent job of explaining SOPA here: http://mashable.com/2012/01/17/sopa-dangerous-opinion/. What will this mean for small business owners? Well if the sites that you use to get traffic from go down, how will you promote yourself? If SOPA passes, every file sharing site you can think of would have to shut down because they could be sued for facilitating copyright infringement. I know some of the supporters have pulled support away from this bill – http://mashable.com/2012/01/18/pipa-sopa-abandon-bill/. However, the main supporter still thinks this is a good idea (don’t know why) – http://mashable.com/2012/01/18/sopa-not-over/. So keep contacting your representatives. It looks like this battle is not quite over.

Disclaimer-I’m no lawyer, just someone who believes in free speech.

Sign this petition so we can have a new holiday for Working Moms

I know the term “working mom” sounds kind of like an oxymoron since there is no such thing as a non working mom. However, there is a movement going on right now to give moms who work a job outside the house an additional holiday, the Monday after Mother’s Day. I think it is a great idea and long overdue. So go to this website to sign the petition and share the video: http://www.workingmomsonly.com/working-moms-day/
